LAST CALL WITH CARSON DALY 4/26/2005
Rebecca Gayheart, Kim Raver, Aqueduct. Add this to the list of talk shows where Kim Raver tells the story of her first day on the set of 24.
Carson Daly: Our next guest stars as Jack Bauer's love interest, Audrey Heller, on one of my favorite shows, 24. Or as they call it in Japan...well I don't know what they call it in Japan. Let's bring her out. Give it up for Kim Raver. Kim?
{audience cheers and applauds}
Carson: How are you?
Kim Raver: I'm good, I'm good. How are you?
Carson: Oh, boy, I've got a lot to talk to you--- I'm good, thank you. Thanks for being here.
Kim: Oh, gosh, it's my pleasure.
Carson: Uh, first of all, you had kind of a rough trip to New York I understand. And I'm a plane fanatic, so just tell me what happened.
Kim: It's funny, 'cause I mean, I'm not. I've never been afraid of planes, and you know I travel so much. And...But now that I have a two year old it's kind of different, you know so I, you know you've got this great person in your life and so, like, the stakes are so much higher and...
Carson: Yeah, you'd like for the wings to stay on.
Kim: Exactly. Like something like that, and get there in one piece. So I was talking--- my uh, my mom and my step-dad came out to watch my kid because my husband was also away working and so I said, "you know, I'm really kind of nervous..." and he's like, "oh..." he's so great, he always gives me the statistics of like, you know, "oh, you know..."
Carson: "It's the safest form of travel."
Kim: "It's the safest---" exactly, like you know, "the highways..." you know, and he also has this crazy statistic like "televisions fall on kids more often than plane crashes."
Carson: Yeah, that's true, that's true.
Kim: Which is great, I mean, I have a two year old, so I'm like "oh, that's not so good." Uh, but I was like , okay so at least the plane will make it there. So I get on the plane and I'm so excited I have five hours, no phone call. I like, lay everything out---
Carson: That's nice.
Kim: So we take off and we're in the air and I'm noticing it's like 20 minutes are going by and we're still...like, I'm like "this is a nice view, I don't recognize this view, usually we're above the clouds."
Carson: Yeah.
Kim: 45 minutes go by, an hour go by. Then all of a sudden the captain comes on, you're like "oh, that's not good." And so the next thing I know they're like "we're having problems with the Delarente-Larenta-Something-or-Other" like anyone knows what that means.
Carson: Right.
Kim: "But don't panic, everything's fine." So we gotta go back to Los Angeles and I'm thinking "I got press the next morning." I'm like "how am I gonna do this? Well okay, just land the plane, land the plane." Next thing, "well, we've got a full," you know, "tank full of gas, so uh, we're gonna have the entire emergency unit there when we land." I'm like "Greaaaaat. Oh, my God."
Carson: No way.
Kim: I'm like, "okay." So finally we land, I mean it's this--- I'm just like holding on and we land and of course there's like seven fire trucks and like, police cars and...and they're saying everything is fine and everything is gonna be fine and meanwhile I see uh, like the stewardesses talking and I'm like, trying to read the lips like "what are they saying? What's really going on?"
Carson: Yeah.
Kim: And I see "it's really serious."
Carson: Oh really?
Kim: And I'm like "it's really serious?!" I'm like "get me off this plane..."
Carson: Wow, the flight attendants were whispering like that?
Kim: Yeah, so the minute it landed I was like "gotta go, catching another plane." So I literally like, took off and I went to the uh, you know the counter and I was like...you know when you go to the counter you're trying to figure out like "who's the best person to go to that could help me out?"
Carson: Yeah.
Kim: And I had like one person that was really angry like on the phone and another woman who was like, talking...I took the really angry one and he's like "can you make a flight in 15 minutes?" I said "I'm really fast." I said, "I'm on 24, Jack Bauer." I said, "I can make it."
Carson: Yeah, exactly.
Kim: So, I like, took off.
Carson: I'm surprised Kiefer didn't just show up and go"to my jet."
Kim: I thought about it.
Carson: CTU's paying for you to get to New York for the press tomorrow.
Kim: I thought like, "oh, if Jack Bauer was here he would like, be in the plane like, fixing it."
Carson: Oh yeah. Yeah.
Kim: So yeah, so then the next flight I made it.
Carson: Well, you made it, you're here for a day, and now you have to go back.
Kim: Yeah, tomorrow morning.
Carson: No time for you to jump in the uh, the ocean.
Kim: Oh, so you're heard...
Carson: I've heard about you.
Kim: You hear about everything.
Carson: What's your deal? Tell them what you do?
Kim: I just, uh, well, when I first met my husband we were dating and uh, my Mom's got a place out in Long Island and I'm born and raised in New York and I used to like to go out there and just dive in the ocean. It didn't really matter to me when it was. So I was dating my husband, we'd been together like, I guess three months and we went out there and I just, it was now, like sort of this weather...
Carson: It's freezing, if you're...
Kim: Because, yeah, I mean, the ocean gets colder through the winter and then warmer during the summer.
Carson: Yeah, but not much.
Kim: Right, so it's colder in April than like, September.
Carson: And you would just jump in?
Kim: Well, I just sort of stripped and jumped in. My husband's like "oh, my God, this girl's crazy. I'm going to marry her."
Carson: Yeah.
Kim: he proposed like, that weekend.
Carson: Just because you did that, yeah. Um, we gotta talk about 24. I, I've had the whole cast on here so thank you for being here. You complete the cycle. But it's, is it as nerve wracking to shoot this show as it is to watch it?
Kim: I have...it's pretty insane. I mean, it's pretty...you know, my first day - again I was flying - and I had come from France and then I had to sort of wrap out of Third Watch, which is the show I was doing in New York. {audience member claps} Oh, thank you. I took the uh, red eye Thursday night, I started shooting Friday morning and I literally like, landed, went to see the set of 24, shook hands with the director. And the prop guys were amazing, came up to me and they were like "okay, we're gonna blindfold you, gag you, and bound your hands. And throw you in a truck. Are you okay with that? I was like "woo hoo! Let's go!"
Carson: ...first day of work.
Kim: Yeah, first day.
Carson: "What did I sign up for?"
Carson: And how about Kiefer? Did you guys have to do some sort of screen test to see if you guys had--- 'Cause you guys have great chemistry on screen.
Kim: Thanks. No, that was just kinda luck of the draw, which was really great. I mean, our first day I shook his hand, the next thing he's like, "um, we have to make out. Are you okay with that?"
Carson: Really?
Kim: So yeah, that was my first day with him. And then I--- I guess it was going so well 'cause the producers came up and they're like "we need to talk to you." I was like "oh God, it's 24. It's my first day, they're killing me off." I was like, "what..." you know...
Carson: Right. Well, that could happen.
Kim: Like I have, you know, I make out with Kiefer and they're like, firing me. But they're like "it's going so well, we're gonna write a love scene in. Are you--- is that...is that good?"
Carson: Oh, Kiefer, that bastard. Right? Like yeah, to the director, they're all tight because you're new, I mean, so it's like, "yeah, she's hot, write something in."
Kim: Maybe that's why it was't...
Carson: So did you shoot a love scene?
Kim: We did.
Carson: I have watched 24, I have yet to see that scene.
Kim: Supposedly it's so steamy that they couldn't put it in, but they're putting it in the DVD, so just you wait.
Carson: Wow, so it won't make air?
Kim: It won't---
Carson: What do mean "it's so steamy"? Like, what do you mean? Like...no...what makes it so...
Kim: Is this how you get the girl? Like, "what do you mean." Like...
Carson: No, no, no. I'm a pro. I mean it like, uh, what kind of lenses did they use? Nice sort of wide angle?
Kim: Uh...
Carson: No really, was, what? Like what? What are you holding back for?
Kim: I--- Just wait 'till the DVD comes out and you'll watch it.
Carson: It's so steamy it's not gonna air on 24? They shoot people in the head. Jack Bauer kills people left and right.
Kim: I--- well, that's America. I mean, America can show... But you can't show--- But, you know, they're, it's they're you know...we have to be careful about how hot it is.
Carson: DVD, I gotta wait for that thing to come out now. Well, congratulations, you're fantastic on the show.
Kim: Oh, thank you.
Carson: I really hope you don't get shot in the head soon, 'cause I enjoy your character.
Kim: I hope I don't get shot.
Carson: She's great.
Kim: Oh, thank you. She's really...I'm so excited to play her. I really...
Carson: It's awesome. Thank you for being here, too. Kim Raver from 24. You guys should all be watching that if you're not already. It's on 9:00 on FOX on Mondays.
